Freelance Artists and Designers

Freelance artists and designers work as free agents and are hired by those who require their services for a certain period of time and therefore, are not permanently employed. They earn their living through commissioned jobs and so, sometimes long periods of unemployment could be inevitable for this group of talented people.
A good way to start a career would be through freelance jobs as one has the opportunity to work on diverse projects and build a large portfolio of work so as to market their talent to potential employers. However, there is the vicious cycle of obtaining a job first in order to have the practical experience.
As the creative industries are so competitive, artists and designers set up business on their own and market themselves accordingly under the title of freelancers. In this way, they are free in setting their own timings and workload, very much as that of a self-employed person. This may attract many creatives through knowing they have the freedom and flexibility to be creative and earn a living without the restrictions set out in employment contracts.
Freelance artists and designers can range from sculptors, dancers, graphic designers to fashion and make-up artists. They have the means to travel and meet a variety of people through large and small projects within their field.
Today, freelancers have the opportunity to network and obtain advice and support through the internet or other organisations. Many a times, a good freelancer can obtain recognition through word of mouth advertising within his or her industry. Social and business networking is a very important lead generator for a freelancer.
Sometimes, it is more cost effective for a company to hire a freelance person than have a full time employee. Many advertising agencies, for example, use freelance artists for certain campaigns such as a photographer, whose unique style in photography could be appropriate for a particular concept. So many creative employers have the choice and utilise the variability aspect of obtaining different working styles of freelance artists and designers to make their ideas a reality.
