Recording studios are professional facilities a person goes to in order to get a sound piece documented. Its services are hired for a certain amount of time and the people who work there are experienced in capturing crisp sound with acoustics using latest digital software and audio equipment.

These facility houses have been around since the late 19th century when the use of an ordinary room was adequate to remove any outside disturbances. During those times, more portable equipment was used. The studios today are more grounded and comprise of essentially two rooms, one for the vocalists to perform and the other a control room, where the recording equipment is placed. There can be other rooms called booths for various sound output that require isolation during recording, so that the different types of sound do not overlap through the microphones. Some of the more noisier equipment is usually kept out of the way in a space called a machine room.

These rooms are designed to be sound proof so that the sound being captured is clean and audible no matter how low. Some of the equipment found in these recording studios can be similar to the ones seen in a post production environment of a film set and comprise of audio and music workstations, computers, synthesizers, microphones, mixing consoles, reference monitors along with other machinery. They would contain everything needed for recording as these are the professional bodies for a sound production. Along with recording music, they can record sound effects, voice-overs and dialogue needed in various projects from advertising campaigns to television documentaries and anything that requires to be heard.

These facilities can be large or small and the larger ones would be beneficial for certain highly professional clients who need a more wider range of equipment and services available to them. Music producers can have their own studios in their homes to cater for the various musicians they work with and can provide a more personal and comfortable surrounding when working long hours.

Live on-air studios are slightly different. A recording studio does not work on realtime basis as the material is first documented and perfected through editing and mixing before distributed to the wider audience. However, a live session can be recorded in the studio for release as part of an album or bootleg. A library and archive of various sounds are also held by recording studios and can be utilised along with capturing live sound.
